The five-borough weekend

TCS New York City Marathon

New York is not a start-line hotel problem. It is a transportation, spectating, and post-finish reunion problem. Pick the base that solves the hardest part of your own weekend.

Race weekend board

Build the weekend around the hard part.

Every race weekend has a different failure point. Tell us who is coming and what the hotel must solve; the board changes the base, spectator plan, and race-day timing.

Your strongest base

Transport-flexible

Midtown West

Why this result · This is one of 2 bases matching “I’m racing” and “Start logistics.” Lower Manhattan is tied on those inputs, so compare the tradeoffs below.

A practical compromise for subway coverage, Central Park access, and the west-side convention district used for recent expos.

Race morning
Good optionality if NYRR again uses Midtown departures. Book refundable, then match the room to the transportation assignment when selections open.
Reunion
Walk or take one short subway ride north after the finish, but agree on a specific street corner rather than 'near Columbus Circle.'

Tradeoff: It is busy, rarely cheap on marathon weekend, and the exact 2026 official-transport pickup still needs confirmation.

Live hotel decision

Arlo Midtown

A West 38th Street base gives the crew a central Midtown starting point and multiple subway options.

Watch: Compare the exact room type and refundable terms before paying.

03 / Predicted finish

These are elapsed estimates after the runner crosses the start, not clock times. Add transit and security margin.

Three shots if the trains cooperate

For one mobile adult who knows the subway: Brooklyn, First Avenue, then Fifth Avenue. Skip the last move if the runner is ahead of schedule.

  1. Mile 8+1:13

    Fourth Avenue at Flatbush

    B, D, N, Q, R, 2, 3, 4, 5

A loud early sighting with several ways back into Manhattan.

  2. Mile 17+2:36

    First Avenue

    N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6, F

Choose one exact cross street. 'Somewhere on First' is not a plan.

  3. Mile 23.5+3:35

    Fifth Avenue

    Q, 4, 5, 6

A useful late lift before Central Park, but only if the cross-town move leaves enough margin.

Meetup: Do not use the finish line as the meeting point. Agree on an exit-side location and wait 20–30 minutes beyond the predicted finish before expecting the runner.

New York is the loudest 42.2 km you'll run. The 2026 race marks 50 years of the five-borough course after 59,226 runners made 2025 the world's largest marathon. The bridges are the real work: Verrazzano off the gun, Queensboro after halfway, then Fifth Avenue and Central Park rollers. More than 240,000 people applied to the 2026 drawing and about 1 percent got in. It is extraordinary—and a splurge.

NYRR has confirmed the Sunday, November 1, 2026 race date, the completed March 4 drawing, and the October 29–31 expo window. Detailed transportation selections, expo hours and location, wave times, viewing controls, and finish-area operations still require the final 2026 runner guide. Historical patterns below stay labeled until NYRR replaces them.

Why we'd pick it

  • The 247 m climbing estimate is useful for planning, not a verified pacing number.
  • The ballot is closed for this edition.
  • A non-racing partner gets a real weekend here — 5/5.
  • Race day usually sits 5–14°C, about 30% chance of rain.

The course

Five boroughs, point to point, opening with the Verrazzano climb off the gun and closing on a set of sneaky-hard rollers into Central Park. About 247 meters (810 ft) of total gain, almost all of it on the bridges; the course nets slightly downhill but never runs like it. Everything between the climbs is crowd noise — the loudest you'll hear on any marathon.

Four-day operating plan

The race starts before Sunday.

Friday

01

Land and remove variables

  • Arrive Friday or earlier if a flight disruption would otherwise threaten bib pickup.
  • Walk the hotel-to-transit route in daylight.
  • Buy breakfast and throwaway start layers before the shelves empty.

Saturday

02

Bib, feet up, boring dinner

  • Use the expo appointment published in your NYRR dashboard; 2026 details are still pending.
  • Keep the expo visit short enough that it does not become a day on your feet.
  • Confirm transportation, bag plan, runner tracking, and the reunion location before bed.

Sunday

03

Race the logistics before the race

  • Take the assigned official transportation at the assigned time.
  • Spectators follow one realistic route, not every possible viewing point.
  • After the finish, allow for the long runner exit and weak cellular service.

Monday

04

Walk, eat, leave later

  • Choose a flat breakfast walk instead of a packed morning flight.
  • Keep the hotel through at least late morning if the budget allows.
  • Do not schedule a museum staircase marathon as recovery.
