Sea Otter Classic Gran Fondo

2027 · exact date TBAGran fondo · Gran fondo1531 m

Sea Otter wraps a gran fondo inside the biggest cycling festival in North America, drawing around 74,000 spectators to Laguna Seca every April. The flagship Carmelo is 90 miles through the Salinas Valley with 5,024 feet of climbing. Mid-April runs dry and 9 to 18 degrees. Entry is open at 150 dollars, but this is a festival first, so expect crowds, expo noise, and an exposed coastal headwind on the way back.

Better info coming — we're still verifying 3 fields on this race.

Why we'd pick it

  • The 1531 m climbing estimate is useful for planning, not a verified pacing number.
  • Opens Oct 6 · Direct entry — no lottery to lose.
  • A non-racing partner gets a real weekend here — 4/5.
  • Race day usually sits 9–18°C, about 20% chance of rain.

The course

The flagship Gran Fondo Carmelo is the old Monterey Century: 90 miles out of Laguna Seca raceway through the Salinas Valley's farm fields and vineyards, with a climb back up into the speedway to finish. It runs on the Saturday of the four-day festival, which is the biggest cycling expo in North America. The riding is exposed road where afternoon headwinds on the return leg can hurt more than the 5,024 feet of climbing. A shorter 50-mile Gran Fondo Pacifico runs the coast the same day.
